Park And Ride Win For Waterfall

Park And Ride Win For Waterfall

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 26 March 2009

NRMA Motoring & Services local Director Michael Tynan has welcomed the announcement of the construction of 100 new car parking spaces at Waterfall railway station.

Mr Tynan said the announcement by Transport Minister David Campbell was welcome news for Shire and Illawarra residents who used the station as a commuter link.

"The NRMA has been actively campaigning for more commuter car parking and is pleased the Government is listening to motorists' concerns," Mr Tynan said.

"More people will be able to get to work on time without the stress and worry of finding a place to park.

"The car park - scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010 - will also take pressure off Helensburgh station which also services Illawarra commuters.

"Waterfall and Helensburgh are among the first stations to benefit from the Government's $56 million Commuter Car Park program meaning 175 new spaces will be available in the region."

Last year, the NRMA completed an audit of key Park and Ride facilities in NSW. Part of the audit included a survey of 600 motorists about their transport habits. Almost half said they would use Park and Ride facilities rather than drive to work if more facilities were available.

Mr Tynan said the NRMA's research found more than 60 per cent of motorists surveyed cited availability, affordability and the lack of safe parking facilities as the main reasons why more commuters did not drive to the station and catch the train to work.

"The State Government has addressed some of these needs,"Mr Tynan said.

"The NRMA will keep a keen eye on the progress of this initiative to ensure Park and Ride facilities are delivered across the region - particularly at the busiest railway stations."
