Report Card Reveals True Extent Of Bad Roads

Report Card Reveals True Extent Of Bad Roads

Author: Date: 18 February 2009

It is appalling that the NSW Government has allowed some of the state's busiest highways to deteriorate so badly.

NRMA President Wendy Machin said a report card that showed almost one quarter of the Pacific Highway had poor road surface was more bad news only four months after the NSW Government cut $300 million in funding for the Pacific Highway.

"The data released today paints an unpleasant picture of the quality of some of our state's roads but I doubt the results would shock any NSW motorist," Ms Machin said.

"The State Government has neglected these roads for too long.

"The NRMA has released dozens of reports highlighting the condition of our roads and today's report card is further proof of the need for more spending on our roads."

Data released in Sydney's media today showed:

  • 22 per cent of the Pacific Highway
  • 19 per cent of the Princes Highway
  • 8 per cent of the New England Highway have poor pavement conditions

Ms Machin said motorists driving on the state's country roads should take extra care when driving on roads with poor road surface.

"The top five roads identified as having the worst pavement conditions are all in country NSW - The Pacific, Great Western, Princes, Hume and New England Highways," Ms Machin said.

"Poor pavement conditions are extremely dangerous because they can affect the driver's ability to control the car, particularly on regional roads with higher speed limits.

"Poor pavement also damages vehicles - we certainly hope this data jolts the State Government into action and our roads get the attention they need."

The NRMA welcomed the Federal Government's recent $150 million commitment to road maintenance and is calling on the State Government to apply immediately for a share of the funds.
