NRMA Motoring & Services regional Director Graham Blight welcomed today's announcement of 28 new and upgraded rest stops for truck drivers using NSW roads.
In January, the NRMA called for governments to upgrade rest areas to cater for the needs of NSW drivers - a call supported by the trucking industry.
Three new rest areas are planned for the Newell Highway and one each on the Pacific, Sturt and Barrier highways.
Mr Blight congratulated the Australian and NSW governments for listening to truckies' needs.
"The Newell Highway will be the first NSW road to benefit from the Australian Government's Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity program," Mr Blight said.
"The NRMA has done a lot of work on the Newell Highway, releasing an audit of the highway's condition and forming a task force with local councils seeking common improvements.
"We are pleased that more than half of today's announced improvements are planned for the Newell."
"The NRMA expects the new and upgraded rest areas will comply with the Australian standard.
"Motorists should also expect that comprehensive details of rest areas and their facilities are available on the RTA's website.
"Up to 30 per cent of fatal heavy vehicle crashes are linked to fatigue.
"Clearly, new and upgraded rest areas could contribute to lowering this number and the NRMA will continue to advocate for new and upgraded rest areas."
