Volunteering Alive And Well Despite Economic Crisis

Volunteering Alive And Well Despite Economic Crisis

Author: NRMA Motoring & ServicesDate: 02 July 2009

Volunteers are more generous with their time than ever despite the economic downturn according to an NRMA Motoring & Services' survey of Members earlier this month.

NRMA President Wendy Machin said people are continuing to help those in need despite tough times.

"More than 800 NRMA Members were surveyed on their attitudes towards volunteering with almost half currently undertaking unpaid volunteer work," Ms Machin said.

"It is inspiring to see that 74 per cent of Members surveyed say that financial uncertainty would not stop them from volunteering and doing their bit for the community.

"Volunteers provide an essential service in the community - charities and not-for-profit organisations simply could not function without them.

"Of those Members that are not presently doing any volunteer work 65 per cent said they would consider volunteering for a charity or not-for-profit organisation in the next twelve months, which is heartening."

The NRMA recently launched its 2009 Helping People Awards to search for four outstanding volunteers from NSW and the ACT who volunteer for a charity or not-for-profit organisation. People are encouraged to nominate a hero in their community who will each be recognised for their work with a $5,000 donation to the charity for which they volunteer, plus a great Australian getaway for two through NRMA's travel businesses.

Volunteers can be nominated in one of the following award categories until 31 July 2009: Community Volunteer Award (age 25-29). Senior Volunteer Award (age 60 +). Environmental Volunteer Award (age 25 +). Young Volunteer Award (age 17- 24).

Ms Machin said the annual NRMA Helping People Awards recognised volunteers who generously lend a helping hand despite these tough economic times.

"There has been a marked increase in the diversity of nominations this year with a definite increase in the Youth category," Ms Machin said.

"People are being more creative in the way they volunteer and finding different ways in which they can help."

Members of the community can nominate online by visiting www.mynrma.com.au/helpingpeopleawards or by picking up a nomination form at any NRMA Office, Travelodge Hotel or NRMA Holiday Park. Further information is available by calling (02) 8222 2112.
