Lake George will have a new attraction for drivers travelling along the Federal Highway today and tomorrow.
NRMA Motoring & Services' road safety Mobile Member Centre will join the State Emergency Service's Driver Reviver at Lake George Wheatley VC Rest Area from 4:00pm today to educate motorists on how to stay safe on winter roads.
NRMA local Director Alan Evans said driving in the icy, winter conditions could expose drivers to safety challenges that many have never experienced on Australian roads before.
"People need to know that winter roads Southern NSW and the ACT are notoriously foggy, icy and slippery," Mr Evans said.
"Lack of key driving skills, inexperience, fatigue, drugs and alcohol can quickly turn a fun weekend into a disaster."
'Chill Out, Slow Down and Take a Break' is the NRMA's message for drivers this winter. Its 2009 winter survival guide will be distributed to Lake George visitors and lists a range of winter driving safety tips.
Mr Evans said it was important for drivers to have their vehicle thoroughly checked before any winter trips.
"Drivers should check their brakes, battery, windscreen, engine and cooling system and add anti-freeze to the radiator to stop the engine coolant freezing," Mr Evans said.
"Commonsense and awareness of winter driving safety hazards go a long way in preventing a crash or expensive repair bills."
Mr Evans said it was the NRMA, Volvo Trucks and Subaru's longstanding partnership in safety that made it possible to provide practical ways of demonstrating road safety to the public.
NRMA's Mobile Member Centre will be at Lake George Wheatley VC Rest Area Driver Reviver on the Federal Highway southbound (approximately 37mins north of Canberra) on Friday 17 July (4:00pm - 10:00pm) and Saturday 18 July (9:00am - noon). The NRMA will be handing out its 2009 winter survival guide to visitors as well as other free giveaways.
