3000 Kids Race In Billycart Showdown Today

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 11 August 2010

A record number of students will be racing billycarts at Eastern Creek Raceway today in this year's NRMA and Department of Education and Training's joint initiative, TechnoPush.

NRMA Motoring & Services Director David Bentham said almost 3000 students from 50 NSW primary and secondary schools would race in this year's event, significantly increasing last year's numbers.

"Almost 100 billycarts will be raced in a series of obstacles, sprint and endurance tests to teach young children about road safety, vehicle technology and the environment," Mr Bentham said.

"This is the fifth NRMA Kids Design Challenge (KDC) TechnoPush to be held and Eastern Creek raceway will be filled with schools firing up for their teams.

"In this era of high-speed video games it's great to see that the good old fashioned billy cart racing still holds great appeal.

"The day will teach more about protection, safety and healthy competition in an active way than online video games ever could.

"It's great that the usual classroom setting is moved to bring the children outside to work practically in teams and learn the value of being safe on the road.

"TechnoPush teaches students the value of working together co-operatively and of having a positive and understanding attitude towards others during competition.

"Students take months to prepare for TechnoPush and the anticipation and sense of competition builds the whole time."

A range of awards will be presented at the end of the day for the following categories: Road Safety, Overall Performance, Environmental Champions, Team Identity, Investigating Scientifically and Design Excellence.

MEDIA NOTE: Students assemble billycarts from 9:00am with racing from 11:00am - 2:00pm at Eastern Creek Raceway, corner of Brabham Drive and Ferriers Road, Eastern Creek NSW. David Bentham will be present today from 11:00am to kick off the racing. Awards will be presented at 2:45pm.
