NRMA Deputy President Michael Tynan has called on the NSW Government to listen to the pleas of frustrated southern Sydney and Illawarra motorists and build the F6 extension.
"There wouldn't have been a Heathcote clearway issue if the F6 - first mooted in 1945 - had been built," Mr Tynan said.
"Motorists need clarity about why the clearway on the Princes Highway at Heathcote on Sundays in summer and public holiday afternoons was removed.
"We are now faced with a situation with families returning from a weekend down south getting stuck in traffic jams stretching kilometres between Heathcote and Waterfall.
"The NRMA has been working hard to encourage the Australian and NSW governments to commit to the F6 Extension and have it shovel-ready for when funding becomes available.
"Investment in the F6 has not kept pace with the growth of southern Sydney and the Illawarra. Residents deserve a better thoroughfare to the city, reduced emissions and faster travel times.
"The NRMA would like to work with the RTA and look for short term solutions to the congestion problem which could include changing the synchronisation of traffic lights and creating strategically placed temporary clearways."

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
