Compulsory CO2 Standards A Good Start

Compulsory CO2 Standards A Good Start

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 06 July 2010

The introduction of compulsory carbon dioxide emission standards is a good first step to reducing Australia's dependence on fossil fuels and developing a greener transport energy future.

NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said the announcement today by the Australian Government was a good first step.

"Since the NRMA held its first Alternative Fuel Summit in 2006 and formed the Jamison Group we have been calling for compulsory standards to reduce carbon emissions and have cars with lower fuel consumption," Ms Machin said.

"This announcement is welcome news and the NRMA will work with the next Government to help ensure all Australians can enjoy the benefits of reduced oil dependence, fuel-cost savings for motorists and a cleaner environment."

The NRMA also welcomed the Government's Cleaner Car Rebate of $2,000 for motorists who sell older gas guzzlers and replace them with newer fuel efficient cars.

"We hope this will encourage motorists to think about the fuel efficiency of a vehicle when they buy their next car and get old gas guzzlers off the road," Ms Machin said.

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
