Flashing Lights Welcome In Western Sydney

Tuesday 31 August 2010: NRMA Motoring & Services Director David Bentham has welcomed last week's announcement by the NSW Minister for Roads that school zone flashing lights will be installed at 28 western Sydney locations.

"Around 10 per cent of NSW's 3,200 schools have flashing lights but the NRMA is concerned with the roll-out rate," Mr Bentham said.

"The completion of dragon's teeth road markings at almost half of the state's schools and the installation of more than 3,000 fluorescent signs at school zones is encouraging, but ultimately a speedier roll-out of flashing light signs is what is needed.

"The NRMA would like to see the Roads and Traffic Authority adopt a regular program of school zone audits to identify safety issues like trees growing across school zone signs, faded signs, changes required to parking signs and whether upgrades are required for pedestrian crossings.

"We would like the RTA to involve the school community in these audits and for the results and any follow up actions to be made public."
