Electric news for motorists: four stars for i-MiEV

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 17 December 2010

The NSW Roads & Traffic Authority and NRMA Motoring & Services today announced that Mitsubishi’s electric vehicle, the i-MiEV, has received a 4-star ANCAP rating.

The i-MiEV was crash tested in Japan last month under ANCAP protocols – the first such safety crash test and rating of the i-MiEV by any New Car Assessment Program in the world.

NSW Centre for Road Safety Director Soames Job said while a 4-star safety rating was a good outcome for the i-MiEV, many small cars achieve a 5-star ANCAP rating.

"Green vehicles are welcome in the Australian market – as long as safety isn’t compromised," Dr Job said.

"The bar is high these days and all manufacturers should be aiming for a 5-star ANCAP rating."

The crash tests were conducted at the Japanese crash test laboratory JARI, in cooperation with Japan NCAP (Japan's ANCAP equivalent lobby) and with ANCAP personnel undertaking the post-crash assessment and star rating.

NRMA vehicle safety expert Jack Haley said the tests were a valuable exercise in international cooperation and there would be opportunity for NCAP nations to share results in the future.

"Australian motorists will be pleased that Mitsubishi has decided to make electronic stability control and head-protecting side curtain airbags standard on the Australian i-MiEV," Mr Haley said.

ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, all Australian and state governments, the New Zealand government, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
