The Auditor-General's Improving Road Safety - School Zones audit mirrors the NRMA's concerns about school zone safety and the rate of improvements.
NRMA Director Coral Taylor said the NRMA was pleased that the Auditor-General's report agreed with many of the problems raised by the NRMA in its submission to the Audit Office.
"A 2009 NRMA audit of school zones around southern Sydney found fewer than one-in-10 met Australian standards for visibility with many being faded or hidden by trees and power poles," Ms Taylor said
"Visibility and awareness around school zones have been improved by installing flashing lights, NRMA-recommended fluoro signs and "dragon.s teeth" road markings. Feedback from NRMA Members on these new safety features has been overwhelmingly positive."
Other NRMA recommendations adopted by the Auditor-General include:
Ms Taylor said the money raised by speed cameras in speed zones should be used to accelerate funding for flashing lights so the roll-out can be increased from the current 100-per-year rate.
"The NRMA would like to see annual audits of school zones by the RTA in partnership with schools and councils to ensure safety issues are addressed," Ms Taylor said.
"The NRMA encourages anyone who spots a faded or obscured school zone sign, to contact the RTA or their local Council Road Safety Officer to enable the local traffic committee to advise the RTA."
