keys2drive - the single largest national driver safety program for beginning drivers in Australia's history - was launched today in NSW by Federal Minister for Transport Mr Anthony Albanese.
NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said the program was developed by the Australian Automobile Association and motoring clubs around Australia including NRMA, with support from the driver training industry.
"keys2drive fosters the relationship between a learner driver and their supervisor under the guidance of a keys2drive accredited professional driving instructor, through a free session paid for by the Australian Government," Ms Machin said.
"NRMA Safer Driving School has supported the new initiative and has implemented it with their driving instructors.
"The keys2drive program aims to equip supervisors with a practical coaching approach they can use with their learner. It focuses on teaching young drivers to actively reflect on what they are doing while driving.
"Developing these skills are critical to becoming a safe driver for life."
The keys2drive program has three key components: a 'free session" by a keys2drive accredited professional driving instructor for learner drivers when they are accompanied by their supervisor (usually a parent or a family friend) a website rich in educational information and supporting material a voluntary accreditation scheme for professional driving instructors wishing to participate in the program which includes initial training, ongoing professional development and commitment to a keys2drive code of practice developed in consultation with the driver training industry.
