Kirribilli Hero Recognised By NRMA Helping People Award

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 15 July 2010

Kirribilli Helping Hand, David Gibbs has been nominated in this year's NRMA Helping People Awards for his outstanding contribution to the community.

David Gibbs has been nominated for a Community Volunteer Award for his work with the Ronald McDonald House Randwick which helps seriously ill children and their families while they receive medical treatment, and assists recovering children to return to normal life.

NRMA Director Geoff Toovey said NRMA launched the Helping People Awards in 2005 to shine a light on volunteers who rarely get recognised for their important community work.

"Mr Gibbs's work in the community is an inspiring example of helping others and I encourage people to nominate a volunteer they know who also does amazing work," Mr Toovey said.

Ronald McDonald House Randwick Manager Peter Schneider said David has been a voluntary Member of the Board of Management of Ronald McDonald House Randwick since
April 1991.

"David's astute business skills have made him an indispensable asset to the organisation and we are privileged to have been able to rely on him for all of these years," Mr Schneider said.

"David has never sought recognition for his work with Ronald McDonald House Randwick and only agreed to this nomination because it may lead to a gift to the organisation and a
holiday that could be donated to a deserving family should he win.

"He truly is one of life's unsung heroes and we want to let him know through this nomination that his efforts are appreciated."

It's not too late to nominate someone you know who is a real Helping Hand. Volunteers can be nominated in one of the following award categories until Friday, 16 July 2010:

  • Community Volunteer Award (age 25-59)

Prize: A $1000 accommodation voucher to spend at one or more of NRMA's five Holiday Parks in NSW & QLD, plus a five-day Thrifty car hire voucher.
  • Senior Volunteer Award (age 60+)

Prize: Seven day holiday tour of Darwin and Kakadu for two adults including a trip on the Ghan and flights.
  • Environmental Volunteer Award (age 25+)

  • Young Volunteer Award (age 16- 24)

The four winners will receive a $5,000 donation to the charity they volunteer for, plus a great Australian getaway for two.
