NRMA Motoring & Services' local regional manager, Mario Napoli will today present Lismore City Council with a $5,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Road Safety Grant for its 'Lismore Late Nighter' bus service.
The 'Lismore Late Nighter' provides late night passengers from the Lismore CBD with a safe, reliable and cheap transport option every Saturday night between 11.30pm and 3.45am.
Fares are $3.00 each way, and a security officer accompanies the bus from midnight.
Mr Napoli said Lismore City Council was to be congratulated for its 'Late Nighter' bus service which provides locals frequenting pubs a safe transport alternative home.
"People can now go out on a Saturday night knowing they can get home safely and cheaply; the service is particularly good for women returning home after a late night out as a security officer accompanies every trip," Mr Napoli said.
"Initiatives like the 'Late Nighter' bus service enhance the safety, confidence and independence of people in the local community," NRMA President Wendy Machin said.
Lismore City Council's Road Safety Officer, Lisa Marshall said, "the Lismore Late Nighter has been operating since 2005 and we are thrilled that the NRMA can see the importance of this service within our community."
"Drink driving is still is a major issue across NSW and with continued support from strong community representatives like the NRMA we can continue working together to address these issues," Ms Marshall said
"The Lismore Late Nighter has been a success in the community and has been reducing the number of drink driving offences recorded in the area. Last year there were 314 crashes in the Lismore LGA and alcohol was a contributing factor in 8.8% of these crashes. Whilst this figure may sound low it is our responsibility to get it even lower."
NRMA's Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for people with a vision impairment and those who are deaf.
The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. For a complete list of this year's successful applications visit www.mynrma.com.au/grants.

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
