Newell Highway Petition Response

Newell Highway Petition Response

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 13 January 2010

NRMA Motoring & Services has reviewed the response to NSW Parliament from the Minister for Transport and Roads regarding the Newell Highway petition signed by thousands of concerned NSW residents.

The petition asked NSW Parliament to ensure that the Roads and Traffic Authority did not reduce the speed limit on the Newell Highway without conducting a formal public consultation process, and provide evidence its plan would not have an adverse impact on driver fatigue and safety.

NRMA Director Graham Blight said he was disappointed with Minister Campbell's response as it did not provide any clear reason why the RTA did not consult with the community, trucking industry and road users before the decision was made to drop the speed limit from 110 km/h to 100 km/h.

"The police and councils along the Newell were only notified of the change after the decision was rubber stamped and only after the NRMA blew the whistle on the RTA's speed reduction decision - clearly the RTA did not follow its own speed review guidelines," Mr Blight said.

"Moving forward, the NRMA expects the RTA to learn from this experience and consult with the community, trucking industry, councils and police before speed limit changes are proposed on NSW roads.

"All drivers using the Newell Highway should take additional care and manage their fatigue and be aware that all vehicles are now subject to the new 100 km/h speed limit."
