Monday 27 September 2010: Maitland City Council will today receive a $5,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Road Safety Grant for a project aimed at keeping kids safe in cars.
Local NRMA Director Kyle Loades said the Safer Kids Maitland project was a valuable safety initiative that highlighted the importance of children wearing properly fitted restraints or seatbelts.
"Through this project, Maitland Council will give local parents and carers in need a free child restraint and fitting to increase the safety of young children and ensure compliance with new restraint laws," Mr Loades said.
"New Child Restraint Laws introduced in March this year mean that children under seven now need to be secured in approved child restraints.
"Research shows that children travelling in correctly installed restraints are 70 per cent less likely to be killed or seriously injured in the event of a crash."
NRMA's Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for people with a vision impairment and those who are deaf.
Maitland City Council Mayor Peter Blackmore said it is fantastic to be able to help local families receive a free child restraint and fitting thanks to the NRMA.
"It's so important to ensure children only travel in a vehicle with a properly fitted restraint that is approved to the Australian standard - it's just not worth the risk," Cr. Blackmore said.
Mr Loades said the NRMA was proud to support road safety initiatives which make a real difference at a local level.
The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. Click here for a complete list of this year's successful grant applications.
