Wednesday 29 September 2010: The 'Horizons' Disability Program run through Southlake Community Services will today receive a $5,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Road Safety Grant for a project aimed at helping local residents with disabilities travel safely.
Horizons is a Day Activities program run through Southlake Community Services for people with an intellectual disability or brain trauma syndrome who live in Morisset and the surrounding Southlake area.
Local NRMA Director Kyle Loades congratulated Southlake Community Services for making road safety a priority and praised the innovative Pedestrian Safety project.
"Horizons clients will receive life-saving pedestrian and road safety skills," Mr Loades said.
"Safe travel skills can be as simple as crossing at pedestrian crossings or traffic lights; we want to increase all aspects of road safety awareness for this group of adults.
"This program will help provide a more fulfilling life for people who simply want to be able to move around the community; to and from work or a social activity safely."
NRMA's Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for people with a vision impairment and those who are deaf.
Coordinator Jan Yates said the NRMA grant had given Horizons staff the opportunity to ensure a safer future for their clients.
"We often hear from our clients that it frightens them when they are out and about," Ms Yates said.
"We will be comfortable with the fact that they will now know how to get about safely; thank you to NRMA for assisting us to keep everyone safe."
Mr Loades said the NRMA was proud to support road safety initiatives which make a real difference at a local level.
The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. Click here for a complete list of this year's successful applications.
