The NRMA today released its integrated transport plan for the Hunter Region.
NRMA Motoring & Services Director Kyle Loades said the plan called for the establishment of a central Hunter transport agency that would govern the whole transport system including road, rail and public transport.
"A central governing body would be charged with the long term delivery of a better Hunter transport system, securing funding and managing the whole transport system," Mr Loades said.
"The Hunter needs more than just road and rail solutions and this fully integrated transport plan will deliver exactly what the Hunter community needs for getting in and out of and around the region."
The plan calls for more 'Park and Ride' facilities in the region which would reduce private car travel, congestions and emissions.
Mr Loades said that while the Hunter already had some excellent Park and Ride facilities, the plan identified the need for 17 across the Hunter Region.
"Dedicated 'shuttle services' will be necessary as the population increases, transporting commuters from one regional centre to another," Mr Loades said.
"The NRMA would like to see rail and bus services including "Air Express" connecting Williamtown, Newcastle CBD and the University, and a 'Wine Country Shuttle' linking Cessnock, Maitland, Glendale, John Hunter Hospital and Newcastle CBD.
"Commuters using different modes of public transport also need an integrated ticketing system.
"The NRMA has welcomed the NSW Government's MyZone ticketing system however the Hunter is not fully integrated into it due to time-based fares on some services.
"Hunter residents need one ticket for one journey regardless of the public transport mode."
The plan also calls for cycling and pedestrian solutions, finishing missing road links and better access to regional centres.
The plan is part of the NRMA's Get NSW Moving blueprint - seeking sustainable transport solutions for the state. It is available on the Research and reports page.
