NRMA Welcomes More Rest Areas

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 26 March 2010

NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin welcomed today's announcement of new and upgraded rest areas on some of NSW's busiest roads.

The Hume, Mitchell, New England, Newell, Princes and Golden highways will receive funding under the $70 million Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.

This announcement comes days after the NRMA released its The Safety Needs Of Heavy Vehicles In Australia report that called for more rest areas.

Ms Machin congratulated the Australian and NSW Governments for listening to motorists' needs.

"The NRMA expects the new and upgraded rest areas will comply with the Australian Standard," Ms Machin said.

"Motorists should also expect that comprehensive details of rest areas and their facilities are available on the RTA's website.

"Australia-wide, crashes involving heavy vehicles are estimated to cost $2 billion a year and more than 300 people are killed annually in crashes involving trucks according to the Transport Industry Safety Group.

"Clearly, new and upgraded rest areas could contribute to lowering this number and the NRMA will continue to advocate for new and upgraded rest areas."
