A $300 million increase for NSW roads in today's State Budget will be welcomed by motorists eager for some good news.
NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said after the disappointment of the NSW Transport Plan and Federal Budget earlier this year, the $4.7 billion road spend took NSW one step closer to delivering the roads it needed.
The budget includes:
"Motorists have been looking for some sign that governments understood the dire need for better roads and this budget will help restore confidence that there is a path forward," Ms Machin said.
"Motorists will welcome the money being spent to make some of the state's highways safer.
"Communities in south-west Sydney will also be pleased that there is some money for the duplication of the F5 between Campbelltown and Ingleburn.
Ms Machin said while the budget would help improve parts of the existing road network a plan was also needed to deliver Sydney's missing freeways.
"What this budget doesn't have is planning money to make sure the M4 East, F6 Extension and F3 to Sydney Orbital are ready to be built once the NSW and Australian Governments have sourced the necessary funding," Ms Machin said.
"The community has waited decades for these roads and the NRMA wants to see both sides of politics present their plans to the people of NSW before polling day."
"Make no mistake - the state of our roads will play heavily on the minds of voters in the next election and whichever party comes up with the stronger plan will go a long way to securing victory.
"The construction of an extra 7,000 parking spaces at local train stations will give more people the choice of using public transport for the bulk of their journey and help reduce congestion on our roads."
While some regional highways have had funding increases the NRMA is extremely concerned the Princes Highway, one of the state's most dangerous roads, has had funding reduced compared to last year's budget.
"Sadly it appears the Princes Highway will, for another year, be made to wear the unwanted tag as NSWs' forgotten road," Ms Machin said.
