Parents Need More Preparation Before Teaching Their Kids To Drive

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 08 July 2010

An NRMA Safer Driving School survey of 413 supervisors has revealed that only 52 per cent read the RTA learners' kit and only 37 per cent read the road rules before supervising a learner driver.

NRMA Group CEO Tony Stuart said supervisors should prepare for teaching just as much as learner drivers should prepare for learning.

"Learner drivers need to be taught properly from the start otherwise they may develop bad habits," Mr Stuart said.

The survey also revealed that just over half (51 per cent) thought their experience teaching a learner driver could have been better.

Mr Stuart said relationships were sometimes strained in the car between learner drivers and their supervisors – which could be parents, friends or relatives.

"Supervisors who want to have a better driving experience with their learners should take advantage of a free keys2drive session that seats the supervisor and learner in a car with an accredited instructor.

"A free keys2drive lesson provides supervisors with a practical coaching approach they can use with their learner and focuses on teaching young drivers to reflect on what they are doing behind the wheel."

The survey also revealed that over half (54 per cent) of supervisors were not aware that a one hour driving lesson with an accredited instructor was worth three hours in a learner driver’s log book, up to a maximum of 10 hours.

Mr Stuart said there was a clear need for better education and information for supervisors.

"Supervisors want to teach good driving habits but many don’t know where to find suitable resources," Mr Stuart said.

"More than nine-in-ten (93 per cent) told us they wanted more online resources."

Supervised learner drivers are some of the safest drivers on the road. However, when they get their P1 licence, they are about four times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver aged 26 or older.
NRMA Safer Driving School has responded to the concerns of supervisors by developing an online education centre for supervisors and learner drivers so they can find the resources they need to become good drivers.
