Release CBD Traffic Plan Now

Release CBD Traffic Plan Now

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 06 May 2010

The NSW Government and the City of Sydney should come clean about plans to remove vehicles from the city centre, NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said today.

"It would appear that the Government and the Council are on the verge of making major changes to the city's traffic system without consulting motorists or businesses," Ms Machin said.

"Town planning via morning radio is unacceptable.

"This ad hoc approach to planning in the CBD is what has lead to many of its current congestion problems.

"We should be dealing with these problems and looking for sensible solutions, including better public transport services before we consider closing a major street in the city centre.

"NRMA supports making the city more liveable and enjoyable but the effective closure of George Street between Liverpool and King street will have a significant impact on the efficient movement of people and goods through the city.

"Where is the plan for Sydney's CBD?"

In particular, NRMA is concerned that:

  • If George Street is to be closed to traffic, simply shunting cars and trucks on to Castlereagh and Kent streets will just move the congestion from one street into two.
  • King and Liverpool streets will almost certainly become more crowded as motorists try to turn off George Street.

"The Government and the City of Sydney should be more upfront with the community and release the entire plan for the CBD," Ms Machin said.

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
