The South East Neighbourhood Centre, SENC, in Eastlakes will today receive a $3,600 NRMA Safer Driving School Road Safety Grant to help local children be safer on the roads while cycling.
NRMA Motoring & Services Director Dawn Fraser said the NRMA was proud to support road safety initiatives which make a real difference at a local level.
"We are pleased to support the SENC's 'Be Smart, Be Seen, Be Safe' initiative which will help local kids learn to be smarter cyclists and reinforce important safety concepts at the same time," Ms Fraser said.
"More than 60 children between the ages of five and twelve will learn about cycle safety while attending the centre's Safe Multicultural Out of School Hours, SMOOSH, program.
"The importance of road rules, hand signals, protective clothing and helmets, basic cycle maintenance and environmental awareness will be discussed.
"The kids will also learn how to complete a cycle safety checklist which is something many adults don't even think about.
"The funding will go directly towards a trainer, five cycles, cycle helmets and vests and award certificates.
"This initiative is particularly important as previous cycling days held by the centre have highlighted a lack of awareness of surroundings and knowledge of road safety rules.
"The information and training made available to young children learning safer cycling habits will help to keep them alive on the roads and the SENC is to be congratulated for making road safety a priority for their young charges."
NRMA's Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for people with a vision impairment and those who are deaf.
The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. For a complete list of this year's successful applications visit www.mynrma.com.au/grants.

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
