Students from Rollands Plains Upper Public School will get a boost in road safety education after the school was awarded a $1,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Road Safety Grant for a project to keep local kids safe on the roads.
NRMA Motoring & Services' local Regional Manager Heidi Novosell said Rollands Plains Upper Public School was to be congratulated for its focus on student safety and education of important road safety issues.
"The NRMA grant will allow Years 3-6 students to travel to Port Macquarie to create a road safety video to teach students about safe car and bus travel, and the importance of safety at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings," Ms Novosell said.
"The school's 'Keeping Me Safe on the Road' project will instil life-saving, pedestrian and road safety skills in the students.
"Safe travel skills can be as simple as crossing at pedestrian crossings or traffic lights and we want to increase all aspects of road safety awareness for this group of young students."
"Initiatives like the 'Keeping Me Safe on the Road' project enhance the safety, confidence and independence of students in the local community,” NRMA President Wendy Machin said.
Rollands Plains Upper Public School Principal Leanne Parker said teaching kids how to be safer on the roads was a priority and the video would be an excellent resource for students to use.
"It's all about making sure our students get to school and back home each day safely," Ms Parker said.
NRMA's Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for people with a vision impairment and those who are deaf.
The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. For a complete list of this year's successful applications visit www.mynrma.com.au/grants.
