Road safety scouts honour!

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 11 October 2010

The 1st Elanora Heights Scout Group in North Narrabeen will today receive a $1,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Road Safety Grant to improve bike safety in the district.

NRMA Director Geoff Toovey said the NRMA was proud to support road safety initiatives which make a real difference at a local level.

"We are pleased to support the 1st Elanora Heights Scout Group's 'Ride to Survive' initiative which will help members to achieve their cyclist badges and reinforce important safety concepts at the same time," Mr Toovey said.

"The funding will go towards a road safety game which will be used to get scout members throughout the district ready to achieve their cyclist badges and ensure they are safe on their bikes and ready for any situation.

"The game will show scouts how to make their bikes safer with bells, flags and correct tyre pressure and also teach the importance of wearing safety vests and helmets.

"Scouts playing the game will face a challenging series of road situations to put their newly-learned road safety skills into practice.

"The information and training made available to young children learning safer cycling habits will help to keep them alive on the roads."

"This initiative will enhance the safety, confidence and independence of people in the local community and the NRMA is proud to be able to help in a positive and meaningful way."

NRMA's Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for people with a vision impairment and those who are deaf.

The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. For a complete list of this year's successful applications visit www.mynrma.com.au/grants.
