Young offenders learn road safety

Young offenders learn road safety

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 18 October 2010

Young male offenders at the Cobham Juvenile Justice Centre will learn about road safety thanks to a $1,000 NRMA Safer Driving School grant to be presented today to the Education and Training Unit (ETU) attached to the facility.

The Department of Education and Training school is situated within the grounds of Cobham Juvenile Justice Centre in Werrington, so that young offenders can continue their studies while at the Centre and learn skills to help them re-enter education, training or the workforce when they leave custody.

NRMA Director David Bentham said the ETU was to be congratulated for providing students with a greater understanding of the importance of road safety.

"The funding will go towards more up-to-date technology, teaching tools and lecture support for the male students between 11 and 20 years attending the course," Mr Bentham said.

Relieving Assistant Principal Tim Gardner, who co-ordinates the core curriculum at the ETU, said the school's core curriculum focused on the theme, 'Stay Safe & Healthy' and devotes a large component to road safety and safer driving behaviours.

"When implementing programs like these, support from significant companies can make a real difference and we welcome the NRMA's response and assistance," Mr Gardner said.

Mr Bentham said the information and training made available would hopefully inspire the students to make responsible behavioural choices when they return to the community and learn safer pedestrian, travel and recreational habits.

"This initiative will enhance the safety, confidence and independence of students and the NRMA is proud to be able to help in a positive and meaningful way."

NRMA's Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for people with a vision impairment and those who are deaf.

The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. For a complete list of this year's successful applications visit www.mynrma.com.au/grants.
