Young volunteer from Campbell wins NRMA Award

Author: NRMA MediaDate: 01 November 2010

Social justice advocate Amy Mills from Campbell in the ACT has been announced as the Young Volunteer winner in this year's NRMA Motoring & Services Helping People Awards.

The annual NRMA Helping People Awards recognise the hard work and commitment of volunteers working for charities and not-for-profit organisations across NSW and the ACT.

The volunteer awards cover four categories; Senior (Age 60+), Environmental (25+), Community (25-59) and Young (16-24).

NRMA Motoring & Services Director Alan Evans said he was pleased to announce Ms Mills as this year's Young Volunteer Award winner for her extraordinary efforts volunteering at the Oaktree Foundation, combating global poverty and empowering communities.

"Amy is one of those inspiring people who go the extra mile to help out our community and take the initiative to make a difference," Mr Evans said.

"Australia needs more passionate community champions like Amy who put their all into helping without thought of material reward."

Amy has been a volunteer at Oaktree, an Australian-based aid and development organisation run by people aged 16 to 26, for the last two years. Suffering from Cystic Fibrosis herself, Amy has also devoted her time to volunteering for the Cystic Fibrosis Association and she is passionate about making a difference for others with her condition.

Amy was nominated for the NRMA award by her mother Barbara who said her daughter recently returned from a national road trip with Oaktree where she had volunteered on a program that saw 50,000 people sign the 'Act To End Poverty'.

"Amy is an inspiring person who doesn't allow her condition to control her life, but turns it around to help others," Mrs Mills said.

"Amy is an amazing person and she deserves some recognition for the joy she brings to others."

Amy will receive $5,000 to support the work of the Oaktree Foundation and a well-earned break to Queensland for two people, including five night's accommodation at the Travelodge Garden City Hotel Brisbane and return airfares from Canberra.

Mr Evans said the NRMA Helping People Awards had a diverse range of nominations from the ACT last year with amazing work happening in the community.

The four NRMA Helping People Award winners will be presented with their trophies and prizes next month at the NRMA's Head Office in Wynyard.
