In Australia, we reached our oil production peak in 2000. Unfortunately, we are no longer self-sufficient, and currently import more than 55 per cent of our oil. And we're not far off the point where we'll be importing 80 per cent of our oil. Meanwhile transport demands are increasing, so that figure will only increase – exposing motorists to oil price hikes.
Continuing to rely on oil to power our cars will not only have a big impact on our hip pockets, but will also have an impact on the environment.
At NRMA we think an exciting new age of motoring and mobility is just around the corner. That's why we're committed to working towards a sustainable and less volatile transport future.
We commissioned the Jamison Group – an independent group of energy and transport experts – to provide us with a roadmap to reduce Australia's dependence on oil, and to highlight the issues facing Australian motorists, the economy and our environment.
We also hosted the second NRMA Alternative Fuel and Technology Summit held in Sydney in March 2010.
Now, with a coalition of partners, we're calling for action to grow the alternative fuel and technology markets. We also want to work with our Members to help them reduce their fuel consumption, and know what to ask for next time they buy a car.
Read on to find out how your next car might be powered – it could be electricity, gas, hydrogen…

There are now more reasons to smile. While Roadside Assistance remains at our heart, NRMA Membership now means so much more.
