A breakdown without tears

When the Rooty Hill Youth Club bus broke down in Dubbo, a large group of parents, teachers and volunteers faced a long train ride home to Sydney. Thanks to NRMA BusinessWise, the children's schedule didn't miss a beat.

Earlier this year members of the Rooty Hill RSL Youth Club took a trip to Dubbo to participate in an interclub gymnastics competition. The trip was going well, until the bus, scheduled to transport the group of girls, parents and coaches 370kms back to Sydney later that day, broke down.

"When we got to the zoo, that's when the bus decided to give me warning lights," says Elie Vlahovich, volunteer gymnastics coach and bus driver for the past ten years. While the girls enjoyed the zoo, oblivious to the problem, Elie contacted NRMA for help.

It was 10:05am, when Elie called the NRMA. A road service patrol from NRMA's Dubbo Country Service Centre quickly attended the callout and determined the vehicle had an electrical problem, which would take at least 24 hours to repair. Immediately, a Case Management team got to work, sourcing a suitable vehicle in the area to get the children safely home.

By 10.20am a replacement bus had been delivered to Elie at the Zoo. By 11am, towing arrangements were made for the affected vehicle, which was also towing a box trailer. The vehicle was then transported directly to the Member's mechanic of choice in Blacktown and the box trailer was delivered to the Member the following day.

"I was beside myself, actually," says Elie. "I thought we'd have to catch a train and everyone had to get back to school and work the next day. It would have taken us at least 12 hours to get back to Sydney.

"I was just so grateful to the NRMA. It was really fantastic. I had to do virtually nothing."

In the end, the entire group made it back to Sydney on schedule with the children not even realising anything had gone wrong. "The kids felt no difference apart from a different coloured bus. They were just happy to be on any kind of bus, and sang all the way home."
