North West NSW highlighted in survey

Manilla Road has been nominated as the worst section of road in the North West according to NRMA Motoring & Services Safer Roads Save Lives postcard survey.
NRMA Motoring & Services Regional Manager Grahame Tighe, said NRMA had received 13,000 replies from all over NSW asking residents to nominate the worst stretch of road in their area.Respondents in North West NSW were concerned about roads as far away as Lightning Ridge, Mr Tighe said. While the New England Highway remains a priority for motorists in the region, Manilla Road received the strongest response with Bruxner Highway and Mt Lindesay Highway also labelled dangerous.Respondents called for the unsealed section of the Bruxner Highway and the upgrading of Mt Lindesay Highway particularly between the Legume and Woodenbong section to be addressed, Mr Tighe said. When 13,000 people feel strongly enough about the state of their local roads to let us know, its clear that government has a major challenge to make our roads safe, reliable and efficient.Hundreds of different roads and streets across NSW and the ACT had been nominated as the worst stretch of road in NSW as part of a free reply-paid postcard, telephone, fax and email survey undertaken by NRMA in recent months. NRMA has been running the Safer Roads Saves Lives since January this year to encourage governments to allocate more funding for roads.Mr Tighe said the new report, The State of Our Roads in 2004, covers every region of the State and identifies many of the problems that need to be fixed. The report finds that $6 billion is required to fix the States major highways over the next ten years, Mr Tighe said. NRMAs The State of Our Roads in 2004 report which is being launched today, underpins many of the issues that the postcard data has highlighted to us.It is a comprehensive overview of NSW roads that should encourage both State and Federal Governments to acknowledge that safer roads make good economic sense - road trauma costs the nation 40 million every day, Mr Tighe said.Safer Roads Save Lives is NRMAs campaign to secure more road funding and encourage safer road users and vehicles. Other highlights of the campaign include meetings in regional areas seeking local communities views on roads and workshops with key interest groups including local government, the road transport industry, medical and emergency services personnel. Some priorities outlined in The State of Our Roads 2004 report include:

Continue to upgrade the New England Highway
Upgrade Mt Lindesay Road
Continue to upgrade Newel Highway including construction of a heavy vehicle bypass at Moree
Complete seal of Bruxner Highway
Reconstruct and seal Topdale Road
Replace timber bridges on Thunderbolts WayNRMA is also launching an informative and interactive safer roads website www.mynrma.com.au/saferroadsA quote from a Safer Roads Save Lives respondent:This road surface is so bad that Tamworth Council has erected signs showing that they are not responsible for its funding regarding Manilla Road.
