Leaving kids in cars can kill

Many of the 1,300 children rescued by NRMA from locked cars in the past year would have died on a hot day like today if left without help, President of NRMA Motoring & Services, Mr Ross Turnbull, said today.
NRMA today teamed up with NSW Minister for Community Services, Ms Carmel Tebbutt, to launch CarSense - a new campaign to keep children safe in and around cars.
?Always take your children with you whenever you have to leave the car, even if it´s only for a minute,? Mr Turnbull said.
?Never, ever leave kids locked in cars. On a hot day like today cars become furnaces, reaching temperatures of up to 80 degrees celcius.?
NRMA patrol officers rescued 1,300 children in the 12 months to 30 June 2004. Most kids were accidentally locked in cars by their parents, brothers and sisters.
?Kids of any age become distressed, dehydrate and can die from organ failure if left in a hot car,? Mr Turnbull said.
?Toddlers trying to escape the stifling heat can attempt to get out of their child restraints and become strangled by their harness.
?Any parent would be absolutely devastated if they returned to their car to find their child dead or collapsed. That´s why NRMA drops everything when we receive a call that a child is locked in a car.
?If a child is locked in a car, call NRMA straight away on 13 11 11. If the child is distressed, do not wait for help to arrive - smash the window and remove the child.?
The CarSense campaign kicked off at Broadway Shopping Centre Carpark on one of the hottest days in November to highlight the dangers of leaving children locked in cars on a hot day.
The poster, radio and brochure campaign will run throughout summer and will alert families on the importance of not leaving children locked in cars - especially during the heat.
CarSense also provides safety advice for child restraints and helps families keep children safe in and around driveways.
?Over the coming months NRMA and the NSW Department of Community Services will be working together to remind families to keep children safe by keeping them with you,? Mr Turnbull said.
NRMA is distributing CarSense information kits to members and early childhood centres across NSW.  NRMA has also reproduced the brochures in several languages and will be distributing them to non-English speaking communities.
