Parramatta school children get road safety skills

Parramatta Holroyd Family Support was today awarded a $3,000 NRMA Motoring & Services´ Community Grant to help local primary school children with basic road safety and living skills.

NRMA Director, Richard Talbot, congratulated Parramatta Holroyd Family Support for making home and road safety a priority for disadvantaged primary school children in the community and praised the Safety and Living Skills for Primary School Children Campaign.

?We want to help primary school children understand some of the basic safety and living skills they might not otherwise have learnt,? Mr Talbot said.

?The program targets children between 5-12 years who help care for a parent with a mental or drug and alcohol related problem or other disadvantaged children referred by an agency or school.

?Children who have these kinds of pressures on them are at risk and might have the need to learn some basic safety and living skills.

?NRMA is proud to support such a worthwhile initiative that has such a positive benefit for the local community.?

The program involves support from primary schools in Holroyd and Parramatta, a local nutrition worker, community nurse and the Fire Brigade.  Some of the basic issues covered are:

  • Safety rules in and around the house
  • Road rules and public transport safety rules
  • Basic, healthy cooking skills
  • What to do in emergencies, who to ring, what to say and some basic first aid

Safety and Living Skills for Primary School Children is just one of the programs NRMA is supporting through its Road Safety Community Grants to local community groups and councils across NSW and the ACT.

?The NRMA Community Grants give local neighborhoods an opportunity to develop solutions to road and other safety problems that are important to them,? Mr Talbot said.

This year NRMA has awarded nearly $100,000 worth of road safety grants to 23 community groups and councils throughout NSW.  All applications received were assessed by a panel of representatives including local government and community groups.
