Toronto leads the way in local young driver safety

In this climate of concern over the growing number of road fatalities involving P-plate drivers, Macquarie United Rugby League Club and NRMA Motoring & Services are educating the local community and keeping young drivers safe.

NRMA local director, Kyle Loades said Macquarie United Rugby League Club was to be commended for running road safety programs for their players and their parents two years in a row.

?At this time when everybody is again aware of the tragedy of young people dying on our roads here is a good news story about positive things a football club is doing to keep their players safe,? Mr Loades said.

?Young men can sometimes think they are invincible on the roads and are far more likely to be involved in a crash and to suffer a serious injury or be killed than young women.

?Improving young driver safety isn´t just about changing legislation ? it?s where people in the community work on developing the right attitudes and understanding associated with driving.

?It is no secret that young drivers are over-represented in the number of fatalities and injuries caused by crashes on our roads.

?Young drivers comprise 13 per cent of the population but account for 29 per cent of fatalities and injuries.

?A 17-year-old driver with a P1 licence is about four times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver aged 26 or older.

?It is because of these horrifying statistics that NRMA is so committed to road safety initiatives for young people.?

Mr Loades said NRMA was particularly enthusiastic about supporting the Macquarie United Rugby League Club´s program, which has a strong focus on getting parents involved with their young people to enhance road safety messages.
