NRMA Director Kyle Loades said NRMA´s Great Battery Roundup was a positive step towards raising awareness of the benefits of recycling and cleaning up the environment.
"Central Coast motorists can drop off their old batteries to NRMA in Gosford or to the Wyong Racecourse for shipment to recycling plants at no cost," Mr Loades said.
"There are close to five million vehicles on the road in New South Wales and disposing of batteries correctly is crucial to a healthy environment.
"Nearly 99 per cent of a vehicle battery can be recycled and used again without using new lead, or other natural resources from the environment.
"Car batteries are one of the world´s most recyclable consumer products. You would be surprised how many yards and garages have discarded batteries in them that have been
left because people don´t know what to do with them.
"Some used batteries are illegally disposed of in dumps and water sources, but others have simply been forgotten and are sitting in a corner of someone´s garage leaking lead."
Mr Loades said NRMA Batteries would donate $1.50 each to not-for-profit organisations Handbrake Turn and the Haven Education Centre for every battery dropped off.
"Handbrake Turn in Gosford and the Haven Education Centre in Terrigal give disadvantaged young people a real opportunity to get their lives on track and NRMA is proud to support
such worthy organisations," Mr Loades said.
Motorists are asked to drop their batteries off between 8:00am and 1:00pm, Saturday 13September at either of the following two locations:
