Tips on writing resumes
Your resume is basically your opportunity to promote your skills, knowledge and attitude. It is a document which describes your achievements, your experience and most importantly your individuality.

It is essential you plan and prepare your resume to have the most accurate and up-to-date information. In doing so, this will help us assess the right information for your application.

Here are some helpful tips on writing resumes:

  • Well-structured and logical
  • Keep it clear and concise
  • Be honest in the information you provide
  • Ask someone to check over your resume and provide feedback
  • Ensure all information is up-to-date and current
  • Spelling & Grammar check

Here is a structure you can work with:

  • Personal Details
    Name and Contact details
  • Career Experience
Start by listing your most recent job first and go back in reverse. State details such as: Job Title (the position you held in the company), Company Name, Dates of Employment (when you started to when you finished), Company Description (what did the company do i.e. industry), Responsibilities (the responsibilities are the actions you were accountable for, use action-oriented words and be clear and specific when describing), Achievements (list achievements throughout your employment for e.g. saved company ABC costs by X amount due to XYZ initiative and remember to be as specific as possible to emphasis your contributions).
  • Education
Start by listing the highest level of education/qualification you have achieved. It should also be listed in the most recent qualification and then go back in reverse.  State details such as: Qualification you achieved, Name of institution, Date qualification obtained and results (optional).
  • Extra-curricular activities
We want to know a little about you as an individual and the extra-curricular area is the place to do it. State any personal contributions you have achieved such as: charity/community achievements, sporting achievements, arts achievements. However keep in mind this should be kept to a minimal-short and sharp is the key.
  • Referees
Start by contacting your referees to confirm you will require their assistance. As a general rule we require a recent Manager/Team Leader you reported to provide feedback. Otherwise you have the option to state 'Referees upon request' and we will contact you shortly to discuss.
Tips on behavioural based interviews
Having an interview can be overwhelming at times, in order to help you with your nerves we have provided some tips and hints to assist you.

Remember interviews are conducted to determine if you are the right fit for the organisation.

Here are some helpful tips on having an interview:

  • Presentation - firm handshake, when meeting and greeting people it is essential you shake their hand and greet them by their name, remember first impression always last so put on your conservative and professional outfit.
  • Be clear and confident when you speak
  • Plan and prepare - do some prior research on the company, review your resume and the effort you have put into it and prepare some questions to ask the interviewer about the company and role.
  • Be specific - when asked questions in interviews, you need to provide as much detail as possible while being as specific as you can, this will assist the interviewer to assess your experience. One technique we can suggest when answering questions is the STAR technique.

Situation - Describe the situation you were in
Task(s) - Describe the task you were required to complete
Action - Describe the action taken in response to the situation
Result - Describe the result(s) of the action taken

We use behavioural based questions in interviews. Our questions are based on the core competencies required for the job you applied for and our corporate values. This means we are looking at your skills, knowledge and attitude to assess whether you are the right fit for the job and the NRMA M&S. Here are some examples of the types of questions we may ask. Remember the STAR technique is quite useful in responding to these questions.

For example:

  • Describe a situation where you have had to lead by example during a period of great change. What did you do?
  • Tell me about one of your significant achievements at work. What made this achievement significant? What was your approach? What was the outcome?
  • Tell me about a creative approach you took to solve a problem. What was the problem? What made your approach creative? What was the result?
