40KM/HR Speed Zones: More than half of motorists still don't comply

Two in three motorists are still not complying with 40km/hr speed limits around schools, according to audit results released by Australia's leading mobility group, the National Roads and Motorists' Association Limited (NRMA).
"It's disappointing that 65 per cent of motorists on average are
still failing to drive to the speed limit in 40km/hr school zones,"
NRMA CEO, Mr Rob Carter, said today.Mr Carter said there was some good news in the audit, with some
drivers slowing down in school zones - but often not enough to be
within the legal speed limit."Close enough is not good enough - driving even a few kilometres
above the speed limit can mean the difference between life and
death if a child runs out on to the road," Mr Carter said."Driving at more than 60km/hr can add 28 metres - seven car
lengths - to stopping distances. That's the difference between
hitting or missing a child on the road."Mr Carter said surveys conducted at five primary schools in
Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong also found motorists at some
schools more likely to exceed the 40km/hr school zone speed limit
in the afternoon.During the survey period, devices laid across roads outside each
school measured the speed of 352,400 cars.The survey, carried out by independent firm Traffic and

to the 40km/hr speed limit in designated school zones and slowing
down around school buses, bus stops and pedestrian crossings."NRMA will be working with the Roads and Traffic Authority,
which has campaigned strongly on 40km/hr zones, and NSW Police to
understand why the problem is worse at some schools in the
afternoon and why some schools performed worse than others," Mr
