Cyclist Hit-and-run: Warning to all road users

Following the third hit and run accident involving a cyclist in recent weeks, the National Roads and Motorists' Association Limited has issued a warning reminding road users of their rights and responsibilities.
NRMA CEO, Mr Rob Carter, said he was disturbed by the recent
spate of hit and run accidents which had cost the lives of two
cyclists."These tragic events are a stark reminder that the law obliges
all roads users to stop and render assistance if they hit a
cyclist, pedestrian or vehicle," Mr Carter said.Mr Carter said motorists, truckers and cyclists needed to remain
alert at all times to ensure the safety of everyone using the
road."Just like motorists, cyclists are entitled to use one lane when
riding on the road," Mr Carter said."If motorists encounter a cyclist while driving, keep enough
distance between the car and the bike so that stopping suddenly
will not endanger the cyclist or the occupants of the car."Motorists with trailers or caravans and bus and truck drivers
need to remember that mirrors or other outer features can easily
clip a cyclist and knock them off their bike."Neither cyclists nor motorists should tailgate the other, which
is an intimidating practice that increases stress and frustration
on the roads."Mr Carter said cyclists must always wear helmets, bright
reflective clothing and use flashing or reflective lights,
especially at night to ensure they remain visible at all times.
