NRMA undertaking comprehensive audit of princes highway

Australia's leading motoring organisation, the National Roads and Motorists' Association Limited (NRMA) is undertaking its first comprehensive audit of the Princes Highway in four years.
NRMA CEO, Rob Carter, said NRMA's detailed audit of the Princes
Highway would provide valuable information on the condition of this
critical transport link for locals, tourists and businesses."This latest audit will provide NRMA with benchmark data to
guide its campaign for a safer, more driver-friendly Princes
Highway," Mr Carter said."The report will include recommendations for improvements and is
part of NRMA's continuing audit program of major country roads."As part of the audit NRMA will assess the Princes Highway
between Waterfall and the Victorian border using up to 53 different
criteria including carriageways, traffic volumes, crash and
casualty rates, signage, lane widths and the frequency of resting
spots."The Princes Highway provides an economic lifeline for the fast
growing communities of the NSW South Coast. It is also a major
route for Sydney motorists travelling to holiday destinations," Mr
Carter said.Mr Carter said NRMA would use the report to advocate for
increased funding for necessary improvements and explore whether or
not the Federal Government should designate the Princes Highway a
Road of National Importance."What we do need to see is a minimum 10-year strategic transport
plan that includes roads, and a minimum five-year rolling works
program by the Federal Government to complement work already being
undertaken by the State Government."Mr Carter said the NRMA would make the report of its audit
publicly available by mid 2002.
