Young tradespeople are putting their skills to the test today
and tomorrow, competing in over 50 categories in the WorldSkills
Sydney Regional Competition supported by the National Roads and
Motorists' Association Limited (NRMA).
The competition covers five automotive trades: automotive light
vehicle, automotive electrical, vehicle painting, automotive body
repair, and heavy vehicles. The Chairman of WorldSkills Australia Sydney Region and NRMA
Acting Manager Motoring Economics, Brad O'Hara, said NRMA is
pleased to be continuing its involvement in the competition because
it gives young people the opportunity to improve their work
practices and become the best at what they do."NRMA has been supporting WorldSkills Australia since its
inception in 1982," Mr O'Hara said."One of our technical experts will be at the competition,
sharing his expert knowledge and acting as a judge in the
automotive and vehicle category."As part of the competition a number of faults have been put
into a vehicle for the entrants to identify and repair to get the
vehicle going again."It's real world stuff that not only challenges entrants but
gives them the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences so
they can learn and improve their skills," Mr O'Hara said.Worldskills Australia is an independent, non-profit organisation
developed to promote the standards and status of vocational
training and job skills.Mr O'Hara said its mission is to challenge young people, their
teachers, trainers and employers to achieve world class standards
in all industries and to promote the status of vocation education
and training across Australia.Over 40,000 young Australians have had the opportunity to
"benchmark" their skills since the competition was established in
1982, with over 250 of these young Australians going on to contest
the International WorldSkills Competition.More information can be obtained by contacting WorldSkills
