Avoid the four major killers on our roads this christmas: NRMA

With the NSW holiday road toll already at three and the annual NSW road toll more than 50 higher than last year, NRMA Motoring & Services is urging motorists to avoid the four major killers on our roads - speed, alcohol, fatigue and not wearing a seat belt.
NRMA CEO, Mr Rob Carter, said with many people starting their
Christmas holiday journeys today it was important they remember
that more than one in three fatal crashes involve speeding while
one in five fatal crashes involves either drink driving, driver
fatigue or not wearing a seatbelt."Every motorist has a choice and a responsibility to make the
roads safer by not speeding, not drinking and driving, ensuring
they take breaks throughout their journey and wearing their
seatbelt," Mr Carter said."Everyone should be able to enjoy the holiday season without the
heartbreak of road accidents."Mr Carter also reminded motorists that double demerits were in
force until midnight on New Years Day for speeding and seat belt
offences."Drivers should follow the speed limits, adjust their speed to
suit conditions and remember to maintain 'safe-gaps' of three
seconds between vehicles," Mr Carter said."NRMA also urges drivers to learn to recognise their body's
signs of fatigue and to avoid starting a long journey at the end of
the day or driving when they would normally be asleep."Don't take risks when merging or overtaking, always wear seat
belts and protect your children by using appropriate child
restraints."Signalling thanks or appreciation to other drivers can also
make the driving experience over the holiday period more
pleasurable - particularly on routes with heavy traffic," Mr Carter
said.
