Avoiding a holiday breakdown: motoring tips from NRMA

With only a week until the Easter holiday season starts, NRMA Motoring & Services is reminding motorists planning a driving holiday to schedule a service for their car before they leave.
NRMA Motoring Information Services Manager, Mr Brad OHara, said
that over the Easter long weekend NRMA Patrols help thousands of
motorists at the side of the road with vehicle breakdowns, many of
which could have been avoided.
Many of these breakdowns result from failure of components
that are only just coping during the normal everyday running of the
vehicle but finally give up when extra kilometres are driven, Mr
OHara said.
NRMA Motoring & Services has compiled a list of suggested
checks for motorists to ensure their vehicle continues to run
smoothly and safely:If your car is due for a service, do it before travelling. Make
sure that the service includes oil and filter, and that
transmission and steering are checked.Have the brakes inspected to ensure brake pads wont need
replacing during your travels. Brake fluid also needs periodic
replacement, so have this done if it is due.Your cars cooling system should also be checked. Old coolant, a
malfunctioning thermostat or a blocked radiator will soon succumb
to highway speeds in the hot weather.Tyres, including the spare wheel, should be checked. Legally
they must have a minimum of 1.5 mm tread over the contact surface,
but it is important to allow a generous margin above this for added
safety and for wear during the trip. Tyre pressures should be set
at the manufacturers recommendation for high loads, as heat buildup
caused by under inflation is the main cause of tyre failure.Check that you have all the necessary wheel changing equipment
and learn how to use it.Ensure your windscreen wipers and washers and all lights are in
good order, and the battery is fully charged and topped to the
correct level.Check that your NRMA Road Service membership is up to date by
