Beware long weekend traffic volumes - Newcastle

With a little planning, Newcastle motorists can avoid peak traffic volumes on major highways in and out of the city over the long weekend.
NRMA Motoring & Services Policy Specialist, Ms Lisa McGill,
said traffic volumes on all major routes will rise dramatically
over the Queens Birthday long weekend.
Where there would be three cars, on any other day of the
year, traffic volumes on a long weekend can increase, to between
five and twelve cars in some parts of the state, Ms McGill said.
By far the greatest increase will be on the Pacific Highway,
where there will be flows of just under seven cars leaving on
Friday and returning Monday.
The situation is a lot better on the New England Highway
where traffic will increase by only ten per cent, Ms McGill said.
The NRMA recommends that motorists rest well before they
travel, that they plan their routes carefully and remember that
double demerit points apply to speeding and other offences over
this Queens Birthday weekend from midnight on Thursday the 10th of
June to midnight on Monday the 14th of June.
