How to sell your car

Selling a car can take time and patience. For most sellers, the aim is to get the best price in the shortest time with the least hassle. We've answered your most common questions to help you do just that.

Note: the following information is intended primarily for use in NSW and the ACT

What can I do to improve my chances of selling?
Looks do matter, so make sure you:
  • shampoo, vacuum, wax and polish
  • clean under the bonnet
  • fix/replace - cracked windshield
  • lights (interior & exterior) fuses cracked, torn upholstery broken stereo bald tyres

Depending on the value of your car it may not be worth fixing:

  • tyres, unless bald
  • minor dints/scratches

Prospective buyers are also going to want to take your car for a drive so get any basic mechanical repairs done and/or have a tune-up.

Why should I book a NRMA Vehicle Inspection?

A NRMA Vehicle Inspection report on your car might be just what's needed to seal the deal. It will give buyers a good idea of what they're getting and could give them more confidence in your car.

Book an inspection in Sydney, the Central Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong and Canberra on 13 11 22 seven days a week, between 7am and 8pm.

For country areas, phone 13 11 22 for your nearest NRMA inspection location.

NSW

The seller must provide the buyer with:

  • the current certificate of registration, signed in the appropriate place as ?the seller'
  • a roadworthiness inspection report (?pink or white slip?) not more than one month old. A white slip lists the reason/s for rejection.
  • a copy of the current green slip (CTP Insurance). (Not compulsory but helpful)

The seller then completes, tears off and sends the ?Notice of Disposal? section of the car's Certificate of Registration to the nearest Motor Registry.
