Slow down in school zones

Slow down in school zones

Don't risk injuring a young child

The 40km/h speed limit in school zones operate between 8.00-9.30am and 2.30-4.00pm on school days - be aware of the time or you could get fined.

Remember flashing lights now operate at some schools.

Children can be unpredictable and hard to see. It's important that parents and carers observe local school safety initiatives when dropping off and collecting children.

Penalties are high: New fines and demerit point increases include:
  • Speeding - minimum fine of $128 and 4 demerit points
  • Approach children's crossing too quickly to stop safely - $384 fine and 4 demerit points.
  • Double parking - $231 fine and 2 demerit points
  • Stopping on or near a children’s crossing - $308 and 2 demerit points
  • Illegal use of mobile phone inschool zone - $308 fine and 4 demerit points
The worst penalty is knowing you've caused an injury to a child
Don't
  • double park
  • pull into 'no stopping' zones
  • drop children off at pedestrian crossings.

These are all in place to protect children's safety and make them more visible around schools.

When driving near  a school:

  • Know the school zones and other routes children generally travel
  • Check the time and know when children are around schools
  • Reduce speed to the 40km/h speed limit in designated school zones
  • Scan between parked vehicles and other danger zones where kids are hard to see
  • Be extra careful in bad weather, as children may have umbrellas or hoods and not be able to see you
  • Be prepared for the unexpected.
