Welcome to the NRMA

How it works

As one of Australia's largest membership organisations, the NRMA is always looking to help our Members more often and in more ways. To help achieve this aim, we have a proud history of and strong commitment to innovation. As part of our strategic planning, and with full Board support, our innovation program includes opportunities for startups and scaleups. The NRMA Jumpstart program was launched in late 2014 and in its first intake had six startup and four scaleup businesses participate.

A set of specific themes has been developed by the NRMA to guide teams' understanding around the true needs of our Members and customers. These themes form part of Slingshot Jumpstart's evaluation criteria.

The Slingshot Jumpstart program is comprised of two parts:

- The Jumpstart Accelerator Program for startups.

- The Jumpstart Bridge Program for more mature scale-ups.

NRMA Themes

The NRMA has developed specific themes to guide applicants toward developing a business to meet the needs of our Members. The themes apply to the startup and Scaleup program.

FAQs

Slingshot is a high-tech accelerator that provides seed funding, a dynamic co-working space, and a mentoring program that nurtures skills and relationships to enable entrepreneurs to build a remarkable company. It’s where tenacious founders turn killer ideas into remarkable companies. The current intake is in partnership with the NRMA and is called Slingshot Jumpstart.

As one of Australia's largest member organisations, the National Roads and Motorists' Association has great people and great products. The NRMA recognises that small lean startups have great innovation but find it difficult to scale. We see the Slingshot Jumpstart Program as a way to innovate externally and at the same time engage the startup ecosystem for mutual benefit.

The NRMA provides a range of services for our 2.4 million Members and the community, including our legendary roadside assistance as well as a diverse range of motoring, travel and lifestyle benefits, products and services.

The NRMA has a strong track record of innovation throughout our 90+ years of operating, expanding our services beyond roadside assist into many new areas.

The Slingshot Jumpstart Program was developed to secure the best and most innovative new services for NRMA Members. The partnership combines the NRMA’s ongoing commitment to innovation for its Members with Slingshot's expertise in the startup community.

Note: The National Roads and Motorists’ Association (The NRMA) is separate and independent from IAG, which trades as NRMA Insurance.

No. The NRMA is only providing some key themes and the chance for you to use them as a basis for testing your product and business model. You run your business. The NRMA recognises that the startups are the innovators and are best placed to run your business; we're here simply to support you through the journey.

No. The funds are supplied by the Slingshot Venture Fund, which is managed by Artesian Capital Management. The NRMA may wish to become an investor after the program is completed and has an option to invest in the next round at a 25% discount, but on valuations as set by the market.

Note there are two application processes - one for the Accelerator program and one for the Bridge program

Applications are now closed for 2014 however we will be reopening for applications in 2015. Please register your interest on the Get involved page.

A great team of 2-3 committed founders with some technical and design talent and business acumen. If you are a solo founder we recommend you find others who are as passionate as you are. We do have relationships with great people seeking founder roles but ideally it is your team from the start.
We are looking for great products that involve the following themes:
• Connected Cars
• Loyal members
• Lifestyle
• Smart services
Your product needs to solve a real problem & we need to be able to influence outcomes as well as serve a big market

You will need to pitch to the selection committee. Your pitch should be 4-5 mins long. There are plenty of examples of good pitch decks and expectations on the web. If you have a demo of your product make sure you show it. You should expect the same time for questions. Basically you’ll be in and out of the process in an hour.

Unfortunately not.

Intense, You will be immersed in the 12 week program and be exposed to the best mentors to help and guide you. Critical appraisal is a big part of the process, we are not a cheer squad. You will be exposed to our investors, partners, sponsors and media. We have set piece events during the program and demo days at the end of the program. We won't kick you out at the end of the program; if you successfully complete the initial 3 month program you will have access to a further 3 months incubation and office space.
We recognise we don’t know everyone, if you think you have valuable skills that will benefit our startups go to our mentor page and apply. We have two groups of mentors. The first are a hand picked team that that delivers face to face content and works with our companies on an intimate basis. The second group are a global pool of adviser mentors with a niche set of skills and contacts that can help our companies breakthrough road blocks because they have been there and done that.

The NRMA Jumpstart program is also looking for established companies, still in their early stage of growth known as scale-ups. A scale-up has a market ready product, customers and a stable team, but are looking for access to a large customer base to help them scale up.

Our selection process is based on an application, which outlines product, teams' capability and commercial terms. On completion of the selection process up to four companies will be invited to participate in the program. Our goal is to have all companies deliver a valuable product to the NRMA and its Members within three months.

FAQs

Slingshot is a high-tech accelerator that provides seed funding, , and implements a mentoring program that nurtures skills and relationships to enable entrepreneurs to build a remarkable company. It’s where tenacious founders turn killer ideas into remarkable companies. This is the second NRMA Jumpstart program Slingshot is co-ordinating.

  • business is less than 5 years old
  • has a proven team and product
  • already has some customer traction
  • is not in immediate need of funding
A scaleup has product/market fit and is moving from developing a proven business model to the scaling and execution phase of the business. You have the ability to deliver your product or service to the NRMA and its Members within three to six months

Most accelerators supply seed capital and a mentor driven program but few give Startups the ability to work with the one thing that all Startups need; a large motivated customer like the NRMA.

Most great Startups fail, not because they don’t have a great team or a great product it’s because they can’t scale their customer base fast enough to generate the revenue they need to survive or raise the capital they need. The NRMA Jumpstart Scaleup program wants to give these businesses the opportunity to scale quickly by giving them direct access to a large customer base. It is in essence bridging the gap between corporates and Startups.

The NRMA are a large organisation that has great people and great products. The NRMA recognises that small lean Startups have great innovation but find it difficult to scale. The NRMA sees the Jumpstart Program as a way to innovate externally and at the same time engage the Startup community for mutual benefit.

Note: The National Roads and Motorists’ Association NRMA) is a separate company and independent from IAG which trades as NRMA Insurance.

No. If you need funding we are open to talking about equity but it isn’t a pre-requisite for participation.

Do I need to relocate to Sydney or Newcastle to participate?

As part of the application process we ask you to submit what commercial terms you would participate under. If the NRMA loves your idea and want to work with you, commercial terms will be agreed before the project begins.

There are a few reasons you might want to apply.
1. You are stuck and the momentum of the early days of your startup has stalled and you lack the resources to get over the next hump.
2. You have a great product and a great business and see an application for it within the promoted themes without having to do much development work.
3. Startups can get stale and you need some renewed energy and enthusiasm and want to feel part of something bigger.
4. You had a great experience in an accelerator program and want to revisit some of the elements of that without having to redo the program piece.
5. You are a world class business looking to add a large customer to your portfolio

Applications are now closed for 2014 however we will be reopening for applications in 2015. Please register your interest on the Get involved page.

Note there are two application processes one for the Accelerator program and one for the Bridge program

• Connected Cars
• Loyal members

• Smart services
We are looking for companies that have a growing track record which includes customers and revenue.

• You will get to access to the NRMA's executives and program sponsors and domain experts to help you deliver your solution
• Slingshot mentorship for 6 months
• Fundraising opportunities – including participation at Demo Day and investor introductions
• Inclusion in Slingshot networking events

You will need to Pitch to the selection committee. Your pitch should be 15-20 mins long. You will need to demo your product and explain how it adds value to the NRMA and its customers. You should expect the same time for questions. Basically you’ll be in and out of the process in 1-2 hours.
