Nissan's electric Leaf has impressed with a 5-star ANCAP rating today as announced by the NRMA Motoring and Services division.

The Nissan Leaf took centre stage today with the announcement that it has received a 5-star ANCAP rating after testing. Also announced were 5-star ratings for the new Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus.

NRMA vehicle safety expert Jack Haley said the 5-star rating for the Leaf confirmed that 'green' does not mean buyers are faced with sacrificing safety.

"Environmentally conscious car buyers who don't want to compromise on safety would be delighted with the Nissan Leaf scoring a top safety rating," Mr Haley said.

The 2011 Nissan Leaf is impressive in its safety inclusions. It is fitted with six air bags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution, electronic stability control and intelligent seat belt reminders for the front seats. The Leaf performed very well in crash testing, with the passenger compartment holding its shape well.

The Leaf wasn't the only winner either with the Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus also scoring maximum results. NSW Centre for Road Safety Director Dr Soames Job said the 5-star result for the Hyundai Elantra reflected the continued emphasis on safety in Hyundai's design and production processes.

"Hyundai has made a clear decision to make safety a priority in the design and production of their vehicles," Dr Job said. "The Elantra joins a range of other 5-star models in their fleet while Ford also has a strong 5-star offering in various vehicle categories with the addition of the Focus."

Dr Job is impressed with the variety of 5-star options available to consumers and suggests it as a start point when researching a new vehicle. "With more 5-star vehicles on the market, consumers should look at 5-stars as an entry point for their vehicle choice. These manufacturers should be congratulated for bringing these 5-star cars onto the Australian market."
