NRMA has compiled Australia's most comprehensive list of new vehicles and has found the Light Class Suzuki Alto GL is the least expensive vehicle to run in Australia, costing around $90 per week to operate.
NRMA Motoring Research Engineer and running costs calculator developer David Carr said new car buyers should choose carefully as Whole of Life Costs can vary. For example in the Medium Car Class there is a $470 difference between the least and most expensive.
"The least expensive car in the People Mover Class, the Kia Rondo LX costs around $175 per week to run, while the Chrysler Grand Voyager costs around $415 per week to run," Mr Carr said.
"Optional extras such as electronic stability control, turbo and engine size will drive up running costs and the buyer can consider all of these when using the NRMA's operating costs calculator."
The calculator is packed with operating costs for an unprecedented 1,200 + vehicles - more than double the original calculator launched in 2009.
"The new calculator is the most accurate ever, taking into account ever-changing fuel prices, on-road costs and insurance prices," Mr Carr said.
Calculations are for private ownership in New South Wales, based on an annual distance of 15,000 kilometres travelled over an ownership period of five years. The formula takes into account the negotiated vehicle price, depreciation, opportunity interest, registration, comprehensive insurance, NRMA membership, maintenance and car repairs & fuel.
