Choosing a used car

With so many makes and models of car available, choosing the right car can be a very confusing, time consuming and expensive exercise. To minimise time and frustration, try to narrow your options before you start looking.

Used cars have obvious advantages and disadvantages. They may cost less but could have mechanical problems the seller hasn't told you about or doesn't even know about.

Here are some things to consider when buying a used car

• The vehicle should meet your needs and requirements, and most importantly be within your price range
• Check its safety rating - ANCAP crash test safety rating and Used Car Safety Ratings.
• Does the make and model appeal to you?
• What is its fuel efficiency and is it environmentally friendly?
• Running costs - luxury vehicles and some imported models can be expensive to service and repair. Check the price of the major services and parts (eg water pump, cam belt (if applicable), brake pads and disc rotors etc.)
• Obtain the cost of insurance premiums; consider vehicles with a higher theft security rating
• How many passengers will you regularly carry? Will your kids require more leg room in the near future?
• How is access in and out of the vehicle with babies or young children and elderly
• Baby/child seat anchorage points/number of restraints
• Do you require extra cargo space to transport a baby pram?
• Will you need power to tow a trailer/boat/caravan? What is the vehicle's towing capacity?
• Do you require space for work materials or sporting gear? Do the rear seats fold down?
