More information on vehicle insurance

Vehicle insurance covers you against losses and liability incurred in the event of a crash.

There are two main types of vehicle insurance.

Compulsory Third Party Insurance

(CTP or Green Slip) is a basic form of cover providing protection when you or the person driving your vehicle is the driver at fault in a crash, and in certain circumstances irrespective of who is at fault.

CTP insurance is mandatory in New South Wales - generally, a vehicle cannot be driven legally without it.

CTP insurance typically covers:

  • Your passengers
  • Other drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists
  • Injuries caused through the use of a trailer.

CTP insurance does not cover damage to other vehicles or property.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

This is a non-compulsory type of insurance purchased on top of CTP insurance.

Typical comprehensive car insurance packages cover the cost of repairs or replacement to your motor vehicle and property whether you are at fault in a crash or not.

Other types of insurance include Third party property cover and Third party fire and theft cover.

It is important to examine car insurance policies carefully so you get the right cover to suit your needs. Each car insurance provider will have different premiums, excesses and criteria for making a claim.
