Remote breakdown

Breaking down in a remote area

sample

When intending to travel in a remote area you should have your vehicle thoroughly checked and serviced by an experienced mechanic before departure.

Before you leave you should inform relatives and friends of your intended route and times of arrival. You should inform police in remote areas if you are intending to travel to isolated parts of the country.

You should carry basic spare parts and service items such as (NRMA members recieve a 10% discount from Repco on many of these items):

  • fan or serpentine belts,
  • radiator hoses,
  • heater hose,
  • engine and gearbox oil (automatic or manual transmission),
  • fuel, air and oil filters.
  • A tyre pump and pressure gauge and some basic tools with which to repair your vehicle in case of a break down are essential.
  • Other basic requirements are recovery gear in case you become bogged, extra spare tyres, plenty of drinking water and spare fuel.

Membership in a motoring organisation such as NRMA, RACQ, RACV etc should be mandatory, as they each have a breakdown service that covers a vast area of Australia.

Mobile and satellite phones are a must for people intending to travel to extreme remote areas and a satellite navigation unit and maps come in handy if you get off the main tracks.

If at any time your vehicle does breakdown and you are unable to repair it and cannot contact anyone, never leave the vehicle as it is the safest place and easier to spot when searching than looking for an individual.

These tips are intended as a guide only. Other precautions not mentioned may also assist in personal safety. This list may not include every possible precaution required.
